Tallinn Helsinki Ferry Luggage Rules

Luggage policies on the Tallinn Helsinki ferry route are generally flexible. There are no strict airline-style weight limits, but practical restrictions apply depending on the operator and ticket type.

Luggage allowance by operator

Operator Standard luggage policy Cabin included? Vehicle luggage
Viking Line No fixed weight limit for foot passengers. Luggage must be manageable without assistance. Cabins available on selected sailings. Personal items can remain in vehicle during crossing.
Tallink Silja No formal weight limit. Passenger must handle own luggage. Cabins available on certain departures. Items can remain in vehicle deck.
Eckerö Line No strict weight cap. Practical limits apply. No overnight cabins on Finlandia. Luggage can remain inside vehicle.

Specific vessels on this route include MyStar, Megastar, Viking XPRS and Finlandia.

Are there weight limits?

Unlike airlines, ferries on this route do not normally impose strict weight limits for standard passenger luggage. The main rule is that passengers must be able to carry their own bags safely.

Large freight quantities or commercial goods may require a cargo booking instead of a passenger ticket.

Storage on board

  • Open luggage racks near seating areas.
  • Cabin storage if a cabin is booked.
  • Vehicle deck access usually restricted during sailing.

Travelling with bicycles or special items

Bicycles require a dedicated ticket option with all operators. Oversized items should be declared during booking.

If travelling with a vehicle, see the check-in times page for vehicle boarding deadlines.

Day trip considerations

For same-day travel, compact luggage is practical. See:

Crossing duration

The sailing time is 2 to 2.5 hours depending on operator. For full comparison, visit the crossing time overview page.
