Passport and ID Requirements for the Tallinn Helsinki Ferry

Finland and Estonia are both part of the Schengen Area. There are normally no routine border checks on the Tallinn Helsinki ferry route. However, you must carry valid identification when travelling.

Do you need a passport?

  • EU / EEA citizens: A valid national ID card or passport is accepted.
  • Non-EU citizens: A valid passport is required. Visa requirements depend on nationality.
  • Children: Must have their own passport or ID document.

Ferry operators may check identification at boarding. Random checks can also take place in port areas.

Is a driver’s licence enough?

No. A driver’s licence is not a valid travel document for international ferry travel between Estonia and Finland.
